Community Participation

Get out, get involved, and stay connected to the people and places that matter to you, with a support worker by your side every step of the way. Community Participation is an NDIS-funded support that helps you take part in social, recreational, and community life on your terms, at your pace.

What is Community Participation?

Community Participation is a support category funded under the NDIS that helps you engage with your community, social groups, and recreational activities. It's designed to build your confidence, independence, and connections, whether that means developing new friendships, learning a skill, or simply getting out of the house more often.

Community Participation is generally funded under Core Supports – Assistance with Social and Community Participation. Some participants may also access it under Capacity Building – Increased Social and Community Participation, which focuses on building skills for greater independence over time. Not sure which applies to your plan? Our team can help you work it out.

What kind of activities can I do?

Community Participation looks different for everyone. Here are some of the ways participants use their funding:

Joining a local sports club, gym, or fitness group
Attending art, music, or craft classes
Going to the movies, a concert, or a community event
Visiting the library, a museum, or local attractions
Taking part in social or peer support groups
Volunteering in your local community
Learning a new hobby or skill
Getting out for coffee, lunch, or a catch-up with friends

Whatever you're interested in, we'll work with you to find the right activities and the right support to make them happen.

What does the funding cover?

Every NDIS plan is different, but here's a general guide to what Community Participation funding typically covers.

Typically included

  • A support worker's time to assist you before, during, and after the activity
  • Transport to and from community activities
  • Help with communication, mobility, or personal care while you're out

Typically not included

  • The cost of the activity itself (tickets, memberships, class fees)
  • Meals or purchases made during the activity

Not sure what your funding covers? We'll help you find out.
