What Is Community Nursing Care?

Community Nursing Care, also called NDIS Nursing Services, provides professional medical support from Registered Nurses for NDIS participants with complex disability related health needs.

According to the NDIS, Disability related health supports can be delivered by a suitably competent worker, which may include nurses and/or allied health practitioners. The need for these supports must directly relate to an NDIS participant's functional impairment, where the support need is ongoing."

Community nursing involves clinical medical support for wound care, medication management, PEG feeding, tracheostomy care, continence management, and other complex health needs that require a qualified Registered Nurse. This care is delivered in your home, helping you manage disability related health conditions while maintaining independence.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about NDIS community nursing care.

What's the difference between nursing care and personal care?+
Nursing care is medical/clinical support provided by Registered Nurses for complex health needs like wound care, medication management, PEG feeding, tracheostomy care, catheter management. Personal care is daily living assistance from support workers like bathing, dressing, toileting. Nursing care requires medical qualifications and university training; personal care doesn't.
Do I need a Registered Nurse or can a support worker help?+
You need a Registered Nurse for complex medical tasks like wound management, medication administration, PEG feeding, tracheostomy care, catheter management, health assessments, and chronic disease management. Support workers can help with personal care and daily living tasks. An RN can also train support workers to perform some routine tasks under supervision.
Is community nursing covered by NDIS?+
Yes, if your nursing needs are disability related and ongoing. NDIS funds disability related health supports under Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living. The health system (not NDIS) covers acute care, hospital stays, GP visits, diagnosis of new conditions, and one-off illnesses.
What if I need nursing overnight?+
We provide overnight nursing care including sleepover support (nurse sleeps on-site and assists when needed), active overnight care (nurse stays awake), and overnight monitoring. This is available for participants with high-intensity needs like tracheostomy, ventilator support, or frequent seizures.
Can the same nurse visit me each time?+
Yes. We prioritize consistency, especially for complex medical care. Having the same Registered Nurse builds trust, familiarity with your health conditions, and continuity of care. We'll do our best to schedule the same RN for your regular appointments.
How do I know if my health need is disability related?+
Your health need is disability related if it's an ongoing condition directly connected to your disability, not a one-off illness. Examples: pressure sores from wheelchair use (disability related), catheter care for neurological condition (disability related), diabetes management due to disability medication (disability related), flu or broken bone (NOT disability related). Your Support Coordinator can help determine this.
What happens after I leave hospital?+
The first 2-4 weeks after hospital discharge are typically covered by the health system (Hospital in the Home, community health). After that, if you have ongoing disability related nursing needs, NDIS can fund our community nursing services. We provide post-hospital support to prevent readmission, monitor recovery, and manage ongoing health needs.
Do you provide 24/7 nursing support?+
Yes. We provide 24/7 availability for participants with high-intensity needs. This includes overnight nursing care, sleepover support, emergency response, and around-the-clock monitoring for complex conditions like tracheostomy, ventilator dependence, or severe epilepsy.
What's the difference between Registered and Enrolled Nurses?+
Registered Nurses (RN) have a Bachelor's degree (3+ years university training) and can perform complex nursing tasks, create care plans, and work independently. Enrolled Nurses (EN) have a Diploma (18 months) and can perform basic nursing care under RN supervision. All Network of Care community nursing is delivered by Registered Nurses only for highest quality clinical care.
